Orthopaedics has everything to do with abnormalities of the bones, muscles or joints, in short, the musculoskeletal system. In other words, the horse is lame.
Lameness is actually the most common disorder of a horse and making the correct diagnosis (cause) is very important. Only through a thorough lameness examination, the problem with the horse can be properly addressed. De Watermolen has extensive facilities to maximize the research. There is enough hard surface to trot and do bending tests, a longing paddock, different riding grounds and an indoor arena.
A lameness examination is broadly made up of:
1. Clinical Research: The horse is observed in movement on hard surface and bending tests are often done. If necessary, the vet also looks at the movement on the soft soil. Sometimes it may be necessary to see the horse under the saddle, because some problems then become visible.
2. Localization of the problem: This is done using anesthesia of certain areas /joints.
3. Finding the cause of the problem: use is made of a digital x-ray or ultrasound.
4. Treating the cause: The most important part! There are many different treatment options for different lamenesses, varying from rest to medical treatment, shockwave therapie or extensive surgery.
Obviously, De Watermolen is wellknown to modern treatments, including stem cell therapy, chemotherapy for sarcoids and Arthramid Vet. Further use is made of prosessed own blood preparations such as IRAP and PRP, for tendon injuries, inflamed tendon sheaths and joint inflammation.
Every week there is a professional farrier present. Does your horse need special shoeing, this can be arranged at the clinic.
